This is our retirement home, that we designed and built to maximize the Hawaiian lifestyle. The great room is a gathering place where friends and family can enjoy each other's company and socialize while preparing meals or just watching tv. The four sliding doors ensure good views from all parts of the great room. And the views are said to be the best in Discovery Harbour. You can watch the surf hitting the coast, see the laze plume of Kilauea enter the ocean, look out over the town of Naalehu, or catch a glimpse of the top of Mauna Loa. Our views are out over the tenth fairway of the golf course, unobstructed by electric wires or any other buildings.
The nearby town of Naalehu has a market, two restaurants, the Punalu'u Sweetbread bakery, an internet café, a beauty parlor, and a hardware store. Ocean View, 15 miles down the highway, has two restaurants, a video store, a market and a hardware store. Both Naalehu and Ocean View have Farmer's Markets where you can pick up fresh local produce.
The Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is a close-by 15 minute drive. Not only will you be able to walk on a beach that is totally black sand, but you can also swim with the many turtles that make this area their home. South Point, the southernmost point in the 50 United States, is about a 20 minute drive. From the end of the road you can walk to the Green Sand Beach, the only beach in the world where the sand is made up of olivine crystals and it really is green!
The entrance to the Volcano National Park is a 45 minute drive. You will want to spend the day there and be sure to hike out to the flowing lava. Kilauea has been erupting for over twenty years, and is continually creating new land. On most days you can walk right up to the lava as it slowly works its way into the ocean.
